Why do we feel inferior to Hollywood? asks Nawazuddin Siddiqui

The Bollywood star wonders why the Hindi film industry is obsessed with Hollywood

Many Bollywood stars aim to cross over to international waters and gain acclaim for their work, however, Nawazuddin Siddiqui doesn't understand the obsession with going to Hollywood.

In a recent interview, the Manto actor voiced concern about the Hindi film industry's 'inferiority complex' when it came to the West.

"I do not know why there is an inferiority complex among us... Everybody here wants to work in Hollywood and become big. I can't understand why we have this complex," said the actor.

Having given boxoffice hits like Gangs Of Wasseypur and The Lunchbox, Nawazuddin feels that their content should be lauded instead of compared to Hollywood films.

"When we watch films from a powerful country, we feel somewhat inferior. We think our films are not up to their level, but at present, we should feel proud of our films. We are making films with very good content here."

Nawazuddin will next be seen in Babumoshai Bandookbaaz

Nawazuddin there is no harm in having aspirations to act in hollywood. Every actor wants to expand his or her reach and that is human nature. One who is satisfied with success will restrict what might have been.

Sir, Bollywood churns out endless love stories. Hollywood makes epics like Star Wars, The Martian, Gravity, The Maze Runner, Jurassic Park etc. Bollywood even got its name from Hollywood and is not even a real film Industry in my view.

The people who speak English are in majority in the world as compared to Hindi speaking, I really doubt if all the people in India see the Bollywood movies especially Tamil and Telegu speaking people. Most people in India also speak Enlish, so they prefer Hollywood Movies.

Because Bollywood is inferior. Movies made by people in small countries win awards and I do not any 100% Bollywood movie winning any award in any aspect of making movie

Actually what we call Bollywood is Indian Hindi Language Film Industry which was started by Dada Saheb Phalke. Our first silent movie was Raja Harish Chandra made in 1913. We are inferior in some aspects to Hollywood, which are special effects, quality of investment in all those lavish sets. But i love that our movies are more of common people, love and we have produced some movies which focus on social issues and Indian real life heros. Many of our actors are much better than Hollywood. Moreover, everyone in the WORLD only knows about Bollywood not any other film industry is as famous as Bollywood. They love Amitabh bachchan, SRK, Akshay, Salman, Hritik Roshan. They love our dance, our costumes, our culture. As a matter of fact Nawazuddin is one of my favt.

@Siraj from USA Not true. Infact, many Indians see Hindi as well as Tamil and Telugu movies also (hindi dubbed). I hope you know about the success of Bahubali. The first Bahubali made 650 Rs crore and Bahubali 2 made 2000 Rs crore. I think this might be more than the total money earned by any other industry in any other country. Also, many Indian movies are showcased abroad in Europe, Americas, China and they are huge hit.

The reason is simple; when you do something original and compelling for which you did not have to "lift" from someone else or take an easy way out, you will not feel "inferior" to anybody. For example, the kind of documentaries Shermain Obaid makes, nobody can point a finger to say it is less than something out there. She stands up there in her own right. Similarly, a Dangal or a Lagaan or a Masaan tell compelling human stories with a unique context. However, if you lift ideas, camera work, borrow technology, locations inappropriately etc, you will always feel a little unsure since there is someone else out there who thought of this and can do it better than you. Actors like Nawazuddin plow their own furrow and therefore can't understand the insecurities of lesser mortals. More power to him and his ilk!

Make more movies like Dangal and lunchbox and stop stupid masala movies and Bollywood will not be inferior. If there is an inferiority complex now, it is well deserved based on the quality of movies and actors.

When you carbon copy every single movie, songs and shows it must be that you are inferior to whomever you are copying from. If you learn to produce authentic material, you won't feel inferior. I can say this about Pakistani music industry and Pakistani film industry that despite being too small and unlimited resources and market reach neither their movies nor their industry feel inferior.

@Siraj from USA Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannad movies are as good as or better than Bollywood movies . All Hollywood movies are not Star Wars an.d Transformers (all fictitious !!!) and all Telugu movies are not Bahubali. So move on and enjoy Hollywood/ Bollywood / Tollywood and so on.

Agree that Bollywood is inferior to Hollywood, but those who fight the ban of Bollywood movies in their countries and queue up to watch them have no right to comment on the inferiority.
