KARACHI: PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari opened on Saturday the Munawwar Soharwardi Underpass near Drigh Road, built at a cost of Rs660 million in a ‘record’ time of less than four months.

He was flanked by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, ministers, party leaders and senior government functionaries.

The PPP chairman said he was delighted to inaugurate the underpass, which was named after the late Mr Soharwardi, who “rendered selfless service to the people of Karachi and the party organisation in the city”.

He said: “Munawwar Soharwardi rendered a lot sacrifices for the restoration of democracy in the country and finally sacrificed his own life as he never got subdued by the oppressors.”

He said the PPP was constructing underpasses, overhead bridges and roads in the city. “Now the prolonged problem involving cleanliness of the city is also being addressed,” he said, claiming that whatever development had been carried out in the city was done by the PPP whether it was Z.A. Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto, Asif Zardari or the incumbent chief minister.

Bilawal Bhutto said his party’s government in Sindh would be ‘sincerely’ serving the people of Karachi as much as the rest of the province.
