CHARSADDA: A constable was injured when a census team came under attack in the Sehray Harichand area of Charsadda, while the attacker was killed in retaliatory firing.

Eyewitnesses said the census team was on duty in Sehray Harichand near the border with Malakand Agency when Constable Taj Mohammad of the Frontier Reserve Police (FRP) signalled a suspicious-looking man to stop for checking, but instead the suspect opened fire with a Kalashnikov on the constable, leaving him wounded.

However, the constable immediately retaliated and hit the attacker, identified as Fakhre Alam of Malakand Agency.

The attacker was arrested in injured condition and shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital where he died. The census team included Naik Inayat Khan, constable Yasin and schoolteacher Waris Khan.

The Mandani police station registered a case and started investigation.

District police officer Suhail Khalid told the media that a case had also been registered against Fakhre Alam in the Mandani police station for attacking a polio vaccination team one week ago.
