At least four people were shot dead outside a night club in the Mexican resort of Playa del Carmen in Cancun during the closing night of the BPM electronic music festival, the festival's management said Monday.

"Police have confirmed reports of a lone shooter outside the Blue Parrot nightclub in Playa Del Carmen earlier today, which resulted in four fatalities and 12 injured," The BPM Festival said in its official statement.

Three members of the BPM security team were among those killed in the incident, it added.

The BPM Festival is an annual electronic music festival that spans over 10 days.

It was the festival's 10th anniversary this year and it featured more than 375 musicians, DJs and artists.

Video footage circulating on social media, which is said to have been shot in Playa del Carmen, shows people running from a club presumably Blue Parrot.

"The BPM Festival has been working closely with the local authorities throughout the festival to ensure public safety and security for all visitors," the official statement said, adding an investigation is underway.
