LAHORE: Waste material caught fire on Thursday morning at the under-construction 1,200MW RLNG power plant at Bhikki in Sheikhupura.

“The fire incident took place in the wooden packing material area at the Bhikki Power Plant at about 3:45am on Thursday. However, the fire was extinguished at about 5:00am with the active support of the Sheikhurpa district administration and Rescue 1122,” a preliminary report sent by the contractor to the administration of the Quaid-i-Azam Thermal Power (Private) Limited (QATPL) reads.

“No casualty was occurred in the incident. And further measures are being taken to avoid such incidents in future”, the report states.

QAPTL general manager Khalid Pervaiz said the company had also started an inquiry into the incident.

“It looks that someone threw the burning cigarette butt in the waste,” Mr Pervaiz told Dawn.

Our Sheikhupura correspondent: The ablaze was put out after the efforts of four hours.

The project, according to sources, has started to generate power on a trial basis.

Earlier, one such ablaze had burnt the record of furnace oil purchase at the Nandipur power project on Sept 8.
