Pakistani cinemas stop screening of Indian films

Karachi's Nueplex and Atrium cinemas have ceased the screening of Amitabh Bachchan-starrer, Pink
Updated 30 Sep, 2016

The management of Lahore's Super Cinema has announced in a Facebook post that they will cease the screening of all Indian films in their cinema.

Karachi's Nueplex Cinemas followed suit; the management conveyed this to its patrons in a post on the social networking site late last night:

"To express solidarity with the Armed Forces of Pakistan, the Management of Nueplex Cinemas has decided to stop the screening of Indian films with immediate effect. We will keep our patrons informed of further developments in this matter."

The two cinemas are currently running Pakistani films Janaan, Actor In Law, Maalik and Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hay and Hollywood releases, Sully, Storks and The Magnificent Seven. Super Cinema is also running Hollywood films, Howl and Deepwater Horizon.

The screening of Bollywood film, the Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Pink, has been stopped.

While Atrium cinemas has yet to make a public announcement, its website reveals that the cinema's management has also decided against the screening of Indian films.

This is the latest development on the cultural front of Pak-India tensions, as the two countries exchange fire across the LOC, resulting in the capture of one Indian soldier and the killing of several others. Pakistan also lost two soldiers yesterday to the exchange of fire.

Earlier, the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA) “banned” Pakistani actors, singers and technicians from working in India till “normalcy” returns. This move followed earlier pressure on Pakistani artistes to 'leave' India in 48 hours. While no prominent Pakistani artiste was present in India, upcoming concerts of Shafqat Amanat Ali and Atif Aslam have been cancelled.

How will this help? Lets ban everything about India and let them ban everything about Us. Where will it end? How will it ever help? It will only add to confusion & hostilities? Dont we desire lasting peace or our egos have made us so blind that we are willing to risk millions of lives. And what of the financial fallout of this disastrous conflict.

This is the problem at both sides - those who support peace and interaction should either forward now - stay calm and cool when things are not hot at LOC. If we cannot sustain cultural relations than there is no need to have it on temporary basis - so that we all learn to find solutions not just have - pain killers.

I remember the time when Pakistani film industry was on its deathbed and cinemas were being converted into shopping arcades, while almost the whole of Pakistan was watching pirated indian movies or illegally accessed Indian chanels. Then the Pakistan Govt made a paradigm shift and allowed Indian movies. Cinemas started having footfall back again and as a result "also" started showing Pakistani movies. The new audience gave Pakistani movies a fresh lease of life. Now what will happen I know.

Very well done Atrium and Nueplex. Now that the Pakistani film industry has revived, we no longer need mindless movies from Bollywood to keep the cinema cash registers ringing nor should we gift millions of dollars of tax-free money to a hostile country (Sultan made Rs 25 crore in Karachi - that's 15% of Sultan's global earnings and paid for 40% of Sultan's production cost). We need to seize this opportunity and encourage Pakistani producers to make more movies. The government should provide financing to local movie-makers so that we can have 2-3 releases every month. This will keep the cinemas busier and cine-goers pleased. We must also crack down on cable operators and the CD shops so that no Indian movies are sold on our soil. Moreover, there should be a complete ban on Pakistani actors to seek work in India, even if conditions improve in the coming weeks or months and they are invited back.
