LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has given approval to setting up of a ‘Road Safety Authority’ in the province.

According to a handout issued on Tuesday, the new authority will take immediate measures with regard to driving licensing system, traffic engineering, vehicles fitness system, vehicle registration, database and management system.

MPA Sheikh Ijaz Ahmed will be chairman of the authority.

Addressing a meeting through video link at the Civil Secretariat here, the CM said as to create a modern road safety system Punjab would follow Swedish model.

He said the introduction of new system would also help reduce traffic accidents.

He said road safety measures would be included in school syllabus to promote awareness among the people in this regard.

The new authority, he said would also help eliminate issuance of bogus driving licensing, besides extending the scope of vehicle inspection and certification to the whole province.

He also ordered setting up a steering committee headed by excise minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman and the chief secretary to give final shape to the measures with regard to road safety.
