LANDI KOTAL: A Pakistan Air Force (PAF) pilot lost his life on Saturday when his fighter jet crashed in a mountainous region of Jamrud tehsil in Khyber Agency.

A statement issued by the PAF said one of its aircraft, an F-7PG, crashed near Jamrud town in Khyber Agency during a routine training mission.

It said the pilot of the aircraft, Ft Lt Omer Shehzad, died in the crash which was caused by technical faults.

“The pilot sacrificed his life while saving the lives of scores of residents on ground as he turned his aircraft towards the nearby mountains,” a PAF official said.

He said the PAF had constituted a board of inquiry to determine the cause of the crash.

After the incident, personnel of the Khasadar force and Swat Scouts reached the crash site and cordoned it off. The debris of the aircraft was scattered over a wide area.

The body of the pilot was later shifted to the Air Headquarters.

Pakistan’s armed forces have had several air accidents in the past 18 months, including a crash that killed a female jet pilot in a training exercise in November, according to Reuters.
