Karachi retain men’s, women’s team crowns

KARACHI: Hosts Karachi outfits displayed their supremacy to retain men’s and women’s team event titles in the Defence Day Sindh Table Tennis Championships which got underway at the Sindh Sports Board (SSB) Sports Complex on Saturday.

The local teams won all their games in convincing fashion in the four-team contests played on the single league.

The other three divisional teams of the province who featured in the event include Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas and Sukkur. Larkana failed to arrive for the competition which has been revived after exactly a decade.

Hyderabad finished runners-up in both the men’s and women’s team events.

Holders cruise to easy win in school cricket

KARACHI: Beaconhouse School System and Fahim School System both registered comprehensive victories over their respective rivals in the Group ‘A’ matches in the the Omar Trophy Inter-school Cricket Tournament.

Reigning champions Beaconhouse School System cantered to a second successive win when they trounced CAA Model School by 198 runs at the Eastern Ground.

Batting first, Beaconhouse recovered after an uncertain start to post a healthy 254-9 in 40 overs. Man-of-the-match Fawad Faisal (68 off 61 balls) and Hamza Rizvi (56 off 85 balls) put them in the driving seat after they had slumped to 98-6.

Medium-pacer Daniyal Nadeem (2-29) and leg-spinner Umar Shah (2-35) were the pick of the bowlers for CAA Model School.

Beaconhouse then bundled out CAA Model School for only 56 in 18 overs with medium-pacers Hamza Tahir (3-21) and Ammar Iqbal (2-15) rocking the top-order before the clean-up job was completed by leg-spinner Muaz bin Salman (3-12) and left-arm spinner Abdullah Masood (2-10).

Fahim School System overwhelmed Ladybird Grammar School by 60 runs at the KCCA Stadium.

Hasan Masood’s brilliant all-round performance earned him man-of-the-match award. He made 50 off 57 balls before team were all out for 158 in 35.4 overs with the last seven wickets falling for only 26 runs.

For Ladybird Grammar School left-arm seamers Abdul Rafay (3-25) and Amanullah (3-41) shared the bowling honours.

Ladybird Grammar School were in with a great chance of victory when they reached 76-2. But the complexion of the game changed with the dismissal of Amanullah who struck nine boundaries in his 36-ball 48.

Spin duo of Hasan (4-14) and Ahsan Ali (3-19) demolished the lower order as the last eight wickets crashed for only 23 runs to send Ladybird Grammar School crashing to 99 all out in 21.1 overs.—Agencies


Bilal reaches quarters

KARACHI: National champion Mohammad Bilal sent Saif Al Shamsi of the UAE packing 5-0 to cruise into 6-Reds quarter-finals of the inaugural Asian Billiards Sports Championship which commenced at Fujairah on Saturday.

According to the results available here, Bilal, who got a walkover against Iraq’s Monib Abaas in the last 32-round match, punished UAE’s cueist while returning 39-0, 42-1, 39-9, 63-4, 49-0 victorious in the pre-quarters duel.

Bilal was due to face India’s Brijesh Damani in the quarter-finals on Saturday night.

However, his compatriot Babar Masih crashed out when he went down 3-5 to Qatar’s Ahmed Saif in another pre- quarterfinal match. The Qatari was home 0-43, 29-26, 31-32, 38-11, 0-47, 62-0, 39-33, 65-0.

Earlier, Babar had won the last 32-round encounter straight against Begench Aydogdyev of Turkmenistan the scores being 62-0, 30-10, 72-0, 57-0, 79-0.

Elizabeth wrecks PCB XI with four wickets

KARACHI: Elizabeth Barkat starred with a four-wicket haul as State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) defeated the PCB XI by five wickets in the third fixture of the first State Bank Women’s One-day Cricket Championship here on Saturday.

PCB XI, batting first at the SBP Sports Complex, were shot out for a disappointing tally of 93 in 42.1 overs. Fazila Ikhlaq scored 21, Sidra Bhatti 17 and Noureen Yaqoob 15.

Elizabeth proved to be the wrecker-in-chief as she captured four wickets for just 14 runs. She was ably assisted by Sadia Yousuf who claimed 3-21 and Sumaiya Siddiqui 2-24.

State Bank, in reply, lost half their side before achieving their first victory by reaching 97-5 in 28.5 overs. Ayesha Zafar led the chase brilliantly by hitting up 45, while Natalia Pervez contributed 23.

Elizabeth was later declared player-of-the-match.

PCB XI will meet the unbeaten ZTBL in the fourth game of the tournament on Sunday.

Flying start for Pakistan at U-18 Asia Cup

LAHORE: Pakistan thumped Chinese Taipei 6-1 in their opening match of the fourth U-18 Asia Cup at the Maulana Bhashani Hockey Stadium in Dhaka on Saturday.

According to the information made available here by the Pakistan Hockey Federation, though Chinese Taipei put up good fight in the first half, Pakistan were the first to score. The Chinese Taipei then somehow managed to equalise.

However, the green-shirts went ahead again and made it 2-1 when the first half of the 70-minute match ended.

The second half saw Pakistan dominating most of the time as they netted four more goals to record a huge win.

For Pakistan, Adeel Latif had a brace while Amjad Khan, Ahmed Nadeem, Shahzaib and Waqar scored one apiece.

Pakistan’s next play China on Sunday in the event.
