ISLAMABAD: Two people were killed and around 15 injured in a road accident at the Sangjani toll plaza on Thursday night, police said.

A 22-wheel trailer loaded with gravel was heading from Taxila to Punjab when its tie-rod broke down when it reached Islamabad. Police said the driver of the vehicle lost control, and the trailer flipped over.

The trailer fell on vehicles moving alongside it, crushing an FX, a passenger van and a Shahzor truck, police said, and two other vehicles collided with it.

The individuals who were trapped inside their vehicles when the trailer fell on them were extracted and shifted to various hospitals by the police and rescue workers.

Two of the victims, Mohammad Ilyas and Waris Ali from Sar-i-Karboaza, who were travelling in the passenger van, were pronounced dead at a hospital. Injured victims, suffering from fractures, bruising and other wounds, were provided medical assistance and kept under observation by doctors.

The helper in the trailer was also among the injured, but police said the driver managed to flee from the scene of the accident. They said a case over the incident has yet to be registered, but may be once a formal complaint from a victim is received.
