RAWALPINDI: Security measures around the Rawalpindi railway station were enhanced after the Counter Terrorism Department told railway authorities that a terror group had threatened to carry out attacks at the Rawalpindi and Lahore railway stations during the coming week.

A senior official of the railway police told Dawn that the militant group had threatened to either conduct an attack similar to the Mumbai attacks of 2008 or use an explosives laden vehicle.

“We have called in extra police personnel and established sniper posts on platforms. There are more than ten holes in the wall of the railway station, but we will first ensure the public is safe which is why we are focusing on the platforms,” he said, adding that the district police will also be assisting the railway police.

Walk through gates have been installed at the station, he said and that help has also been sought from the Elite Force commandoes, who will be patrolling the railway station’s premises.
