UPPER DIR: Two micro hydro powerhouses (MHPs), with each having 30 kilowatt capacity, were inaugurated in Katan Bala and Jabbar areas of the picturesque Usheri Darra here on Sunday.
Provincial minister for local government Inayatullah Khan and MNA Sahibzada Tariqullah inaugurated the projects.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organisation (PEDO) in collaboration with NGOs Creative Community Development Programme (CCDP) and Dir Area Development Organisation (DADO) has built the powerhouses.
Upper Dir District Nazim Sahibzada Faseehullah, PEDO director Wajeed Nawaz, CCDP chief engineer Mohammad Khaliq, DADO chief executive Abid Khan, district councillor from Jabbar union council Biradar Khan and elders were present on the occasion.
On the occasion, Mr Tariqullah, who is JI’s parliamentary leader in the National Assembly, said the area was a backward one and the people had been facing difficulties due to excessive loadshedding. He said after the installation of the powerhouses the locals would get uninterrupted power supply.
Minister Inayatullah Khan said the provincial government had planned to install 350 MHPs across KP, 44 of them, in Upper Dir. He said the provincial government was making serious efforts to end power crisis in the province, adding long-term projects would also be initiated to end loadshedding.
He said negotiations between the KP government and Asian Development Bank were continuing to build 1,000 to 1,500 small powerhouses in KP.
PEDO director Wajeed Nawaz and CCDP chief engineer Mohammad Khaliq said thousands of people would benefit from the two power houses, getting cheap electricity.
