LAHORE: Residents of Yousafnagar on Friday protested against the Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) for delay in replacement of transformer.
A number of people reached Babu Sabu interchange and blocked the motorway for traffic for more than three hours to protest against Lesco for its failure to install transformer in their area. They chanted slogans against the officials for not providing them electricity for the last three days. They said electricity supply to the area was disrupted during rain three days ago and they lodged complaint but no one listened to them.
Among the protesters were women and children who set tyres on fire. The women protesters told reporters their homes were without electricity for the last three days and they could not send their children to schools.
Motorists were trapped due to protest and could not leave or enter the city.
Later, a police contingent reached the spot and dispersed the protesters.
Sherakot SHO Inspector Hasan Raza told Dawn the protesters were demanding that their electricity issue be solved and he contacted the Lesco higher-ups and requested them to solve the problem. He said the protesters on the assurance of policemen cleared the road for traffic.
Lesco spokesman Imran said teams had been sent to the spot to change the transformer. He said they changed the transformer two days ago but it also went out of order. The Gulshan-i-Ravi sub-division had released the new transformer to fix the problem, he added.
