Rain stops play in first ODI

SOUTHAMPTON: Rain stopped play in the first one-day international between Pakistan and England on Wednesday after the home side had scored 193 for 3 off 34 overs in reply to the visitors’ 260 for 6 off 50 overs. England needed 68 runs for victory with 16 overs remaining.

Earlier Pakistan chose to bat after winning the toss. Azhar Ali played a captain’s , knock, scoring 82, and Sarfaraz Ahmed made 55 in the day/night match. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid was England’s most successful bowler, taking two for 51 in nine overs.

Jason Roy led the England chase with a swashbuckling 65 off 56 deliveries, combining with Joe Root (61) in an 89-run partnership for the second wicket. This was the first of a five-match series.
