ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), the opposition party in the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI), has filed an application with the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to become a party in cases filed by the Capital Development Authority’s (CDA) employees’ union and associations against the MCI.
The CDA employees’ union and officers’ union have filed various petitions in the IHC challenging the transfer of around 8,000 employees and assets from the CDA to the newly-formed MCI.
Mayor Sheikh Ansar Aziz, from the PML-N, has claimed that some CDA officers want to derail the local government system by disrupting the smooth transfer of employees and assets.
The MCI is contesting the case in court, and in order to support the mayor’s stance against the CDA and to implement the local government act, the opposition has also decided to become a party in the case, which will be taken up on Thursday.
“[The PTI] and the mayor are on the same page. We want the implementation of the local government act in true letter and spirit,” Opposition Leader Ali Awan said.
He added that the CDA has failed to deliver on various fronts, including resolving the water shortage, opening new sectors, removing proliferating encroachments and so on, and was now creating obstacles for the MCI.
“We will contest the case in the interest of the MCI,” he said.
