RAWALPINDI: The Rawal Town Municipal Administration (RTMA) has stopped the anti-encroachment drive launched in 46 union councils as its officials are waiting for the change of the status of the civic body after the elections on reserved seats.
However, the provincial government is yet to issue a notification to change the status of the RTMA to Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC).
The Election Commission has issued the schedule for the elections on the reserved women, labour, technocrat, minorities and youth seats from September 1.
A senior RTMA official told Dawn that the civic body officials were reluctant to launch the anti-encroachment drive as they were not sure about their job in the same civic body.
He said mostly people made complaints to the civic body about the encroachments in Raja Bazaar and adjoining markets, especially on the footpaths.
He said there was confusion in the civic body as after the formation of the local government most of the officials would be transferred to other departments.
He said some sections of the City District Government Rawalpindi and the RTMA would also be merged.
Despite repeated attempts, Rawal Town Administrator Nazia Parveen Sudhan could not be contacted for comments.
