COLOMBO: Pakistan on Wednesday leapfrogged Australia to secure the second position in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings after Sri Lanka completed a 3-0 whitewash over Steven Smith's side with a 163-run victory.
Following India's series victory against West Indies during the ongoing four-match Test series, Australia had to win their final Test against the Lankans to stay at the top of the table.
However, their defeat meant that Virat Kohli's men have regained the number one spot.

Pakistan will keep an eye on the final Test between West Indies and India that starts Thursday, as a draw or the latter's defeat will see Pakistan top the table.

I don't care about the ranking as squaring the series in England after being on top most of the series is a big achievement for this side - this team has performed much better than the star-studded teams that we had in the past - credit to Misbah as captain and the batsmen (Azhar, Asad, Misbah, Younis and Shan) to step up to the challenge and play responsibly to put enough runs on the board. I was slightly disappointed by the bowling unit but that's because I had very high expectations from Yasir, Aamir and Wahab. In the end, they performed as a team which is important - hope to see Misbah, Younis, Yasir and Aamir in action in Australia!

Pakistan deserve to be No.1, the way they have played in the last 5 years is nothing short of a miracle, along the way they have beaten AUS, ENG, SL, BAN, ZIM, drawn against SA, NZ. Amazing stats, this shows that not playing IND is not a big problem for PAK, we have climbed up the latter witht out them. The only worry I now have is, the powers that control the ICC will be more active to kick Pakistan down. Peace.

well the equations for India are really tough...even after winning the series we will have to win the final match to retain the top rank...I think that's the travesty of No 1 spot, you will always have to face tougher challenges than others...Good going for Pakistan though...well done team Pakistan

@Amit Pakistan is not depending on India, if you understand logic Pakistan is depending on WI to draw or beat India. If India wins then India would stay top. Don't for get Sri Lanka who whitewashed Aus which helped Pakistan.

Really like to see India Pakistan series at this point. I am sure Pakistan won't mind to go to India to play any format of this game. It's up to India now. I think this will also help to ease off some tension between these 2 countries. Media from both sides should start a campaign for India Pakistan cricket series. I am sure public from both countries will support them.

If India retain the top spot in ranking by beating WI in the 4th test, it'd be a joke. It'd prove once again that ranking system is meaningless. Teams like Aus, Eng, South Africa, NZ, Pak are much better than India. India has no world-class bowlers.

Pakistan has a great future with some of the youngsters playing a mature role. However, let's be fair whether in assessing they have earned the no. 1 spot. This is caused more by efforts by SL and now WI.
Yes, the ICC charts will show them to be no. 1, but do they truly believe they have the best test team in the world. Answering that honestly defines our sporting character.
BTW- same applies for India too.
