Could a film really arrest the spiraling divorce rate around the world? Actor Akshay Kumar thinks so.

Talking about his next film Rustom, Akshay said his film based on a real-life story of infidelity "will be loved by women and also save marriages and stop divorces," reports Indian Express.

Rustom is inspired by the 1959 case of a naval officer K. M. Nanavati, who murdered his wife’s lover. In the film, the murder leads to a court case, public sympathy and media trial on proving Nanavati's guilt or innocence in the matter.

When asked about what he'd like to take from the film, he said, “I am going to take my uniform. And I am not only going to take back, on the contrary, this film is going to give, it is going to save a lot of marriages and is going to stop people from taking divorce, you invest so much into a relationship, so this film is going to tell you what goes into it.”

Rustom also marks the first time a Bollywood film put a Parsi character in the spotlight. “It is a different subject, it is based on real-life stories and it is the first time somebody is playing a Parsi Navy officer, neither has anybody played a Parsi main lead or an officer’s role,” said Akshay.

The film has received support from the industry with Salman Khan, Ranveer Singh, Sonakshi Sinha, Sonam Kapoor and Karan Johar all making special videos on social media. Akshay said, “It’s great when the industry supports you and I’m very thankful to Salman for starting this and also to Ranveer, Sonakshi, Karan Johar, Sonam.”

Rustom, also starring Ileana D’Cruz and Esha Gupta, releases on August 12.

The most loved and controversy free actor. Regarding this movie. I wish all the best . BTW, In Indian society, especially Hindu society, divorce is a taboo and we are proud of that. However foreign cultures like Western and Arabian culture have brought this ugly trend in society.

@Mimi sur , to a certain extent you are right. The reason for that is that marriage in certain faiths is a 'Contract' than a 'lifelong bond, a sacrosanct bond'

@Mimi sur taboo in what sense? Divorce is very painful but you certainly do not want an unhappy relationship to go on just because your culture will not accept it.

He is right. Marriage is two souls meeting for ever according to Hinduism. That is why there is no Sanskrit or Hindi word for divorce. The word 'Talaaq'has been taken from Arabian or Persian in Hindi. This film gives us message to strengthen the institution of marriage which is need of the hour as western practice of live in relationship is harming the social and moral values in our part of the world.
