Qandeel Baloch wiped off Facebook, Instagram

Deceased star's official page and Insta account removed by social media giant
Updated 24 Jul, 2016

Social media sensation Qandeel Baloch, who was murdered by her brother last week, has been deleted off Facebook.

Her official page that hosted her photos and videos is no longer available, and her account on Instagram - also owned by Facebook - has been deleted.

As per Facebook policy, any personal account that belongs to a deceased individual is automatically made into a memorialized account where friends and family can share memories on the timeline.

However, "pages with a sole admin whose account was memorialized will be removed from Facebook if we receive a valid request," states Facebook's help centre.

The reason for her accounts' deletion is unknown.

One plausible explanation could be that since Qandeel was the sole admin and many may have reported her accounts after her death, they were removed.

Another explanation could be that Facebook received a request for deletion of her accounts from the government; the company has, on multiple occasions removed or blocked content on requests by the state.

She is no longer on Instagram either.
She is no longer on Instagram either.

That's the end of her videos and photos, folks.

Qandeel Baloch's claim to fame were her risque Facebook and Instagram uploads which many found objectionable.

The 26-year-old social media star was strangled to death by her brother at her Multan residence. He was arrested by police in Dera Ghazi Khan and confessed to killing his sister in the name of 'honour'.

All that remains of her online persona is her Twitter handle.

looking at her twitter messages above, it seems her social media accounts were handled by someone else. Someone who could interact and communicate properly. She can't be a sole handler.

Identity protection? The deceased person was already trying to hide their real identity by using a different name

As much as there might be legitimate reasons for deleting her social media accounts, this is depressing because it represents an erasure. Rest in power Qandeel.

Removing Qandeel Baluch's account from Facebook is a disservice to the women of Pakistan. Qandeel lost her life to bring the plight of Pakistani women to the international community's attention, Facebook's deletion of Qandeel's account is tantamount to giving in to religious and conservative bigotry.

By doing so they also have saved her from further punishment in hereafter. May God forgive her because of her good doings which she did and were known to her.

There is always a beginning to an end. The point is whether or not our direction is leading to peace, prosperity and success. I strongly believe our parliament, law enforcing units and judges can only be doing the society a big favour by introducing life sentences for the rape or murder in the name of honour. There never is and never has been any honourin killing. The sooner this becomes a criminal offence punishable by a minimum life in prison the better it will be for humanity as a whole. Be proud of living a free and fair life the way you want. Let no one dictate you as to what you like the best. Your culture, your upbringing, your belief and above all the teachings of religion are sufficient to guide you to a happy and prosperous life.

Those who think that Qandeel is dead are dead wrong. Qandeel is a living phenomenon. There will be many more Qandeels. Long live Qandeel!
