PESHAWAR: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has arrested a former secretary of the KP housing department, Zakiullah Khan, and his brother and former additional inspector general of the traffic police, Zafarullah Khan, on the charge of possessing Rs150 million illegal assets.

The two were produced before an accountability court on Friday and were remanded in the NAB custody for 10 days.

Judge Asim Imam Khan ordered their production in the court on Aug 1.

The NAB said Zakiullah remained posted on key posts including member of chief minister inspection team and secretary housing, while Zafarullah had also served as a government servant.

The NAB alleged that during their government service, the suspects had piled up assets, which were disproportionate to the known sources of their income.

The properties which NAB alleged belong to the suspects include a bungalow in Jinnahabad area of Abbottabad; two bungalows on Shami Road in Peshawar; a house in Shadman Colony, Peshawar; a bungalow on Kakool Road in Abbottabad; a bungalow in DHA, Islamabad; two plots in Regi Model Town, Peshawar; plots in Abbottabad cantonment area, Hayatabad Peshawar and DHA, Islamabad; and two vehicles.

Zakiullah was previously arrested by NAB over alleged involvement in a multi-million scam of land acquisition in Darwaza area of Nathiagali, Abbottabad.

He is being tried in that case by an accountability court here.

Also in the day, the court remanded three Haj tour operators in the NAB custody for 14 days in a Rs20 million fraud case.

Suspects including Nazar Muhammad, Waqas and Abdullah Jan, owners of Afridi Hajj and Umrah Services Private Limited Peshawar, were arrested a day ago by the NAB KP.

NAB special prosecutor Hasnain Tariq told the court that the suspects received Rs340,000 to Rs380,000 each from many intending pilgrims but didn’t send them to Saudi Arabia to perform Haj and thus, taking away their money.

He said 25 people had lodged complaint with the NAB amid reports that the suspects had cheated around 60 people.
