Iraq mourns as Baghdad bleeds

Over 200 people died in an IS-claimed suicide attack on a busy market thronged by shoppers in Baghdad.

Iraqis mourn for three days after a suicide attack in a busy Baghdad shopping district claimed by the militant Islamic State group killed over 200 people and left more than 200 others injured.

The attack, one of the deadliest militant attacks Iraq has seen, came a week after Iraqi forces recaptured Fallujah from IS, leaving Mosul as the only Iraqi city under IS control.

The suicide car bombing ripped through a crowded shopping area and sparked infernos in nearby buildings as crowds of people watched from the rubble-filled street.

The blast hit the Karrada district early Sunday as the area was packed with shoppers ahead of this week's holiday marking the end of Ramazan.

A member of the civil defence forces said it would take "a number of days" to recover the bodies of the victims.
