It's raining in Karachi right now and people are totally losing it

The city's love-hate relationship with rain is dominating social media
29 Jun, 2016

The love/hate relationship Karachiites have with rain has been one for the books. When that first drop of rain hits the ground, we're instantly conflicted: what do we want more, rain or electricity?

At the end of the day, we know we have no choice in the matter anyway. We get out on the flooded roads and go for a drive (which turns into a swim) or make some pakoras and chai and until the phones die out, Karachiites make sure everyone knows that it's raining in their city.

Since we're not used to it, we take rather questionable precautionary measures.

Some commemorate the weather with a selfie.

Not in the rain or in front of a window or anything...just a selfie.

It makes for great Instagram material -- no filter needed!

It brings out the poet in some.

Single people were just not having any of it.

Some crank up the nostalgia with old tunes.

However, the employed start to panic; the road to home is dark and full of traffic/potholes.

The fact that there's going to be no bijli starts to quickly overpower the joy of rain.

But who cares? In typical Karachi fashion, when it rains, it pours.

You have been warned.

Oh, the irony.

Almost same with Mumbai. The bigly does not go. But the traffic jams and potholes are the same. Surprised to see photo of lagoon. In Pakistan whatever the weather India has to figure in the discussion. In India very rarely Pakistan comes in discussion.

Lets hope it remains a Rehmat and does not quickly turn into a zehmat. All the best to Karachiites!

May you have forty days of continuous rain so that all the water reservoirs are full and the tanker-mafia is buried for ever.

@Ramesh Nakhwa LOL dude! No one refers to India in article. And would it really matter if they did? Just chill like the Pakistanis and start "singing in the rain" (remember that old song?). @author: great article, cheered me up! Thanks!

So, it does not rain frequently in Karachi? Mumbai gets fair share of rain without any electricity outage! Thank God.

This article is some how humorous cause it reflects true gestures of Karachiittes while experiencing rail fall. But i think people have forgotten how it use to rain in karachi two or three years before. In monsoon the clouds use to cover the sky like a blanket and the whole june and july was covered in the shade of white clouds that rained heavily in nights. So we're use to that don't portray us we're seeing the rain the first time. As far as the lively culture of taking selfies is concerned, people of Karachi actually live the moments and share it on internet cause of the digital cellphone trend. It's not that bad I think its somehow good cause people get to see the amazing, lively and full of life view of the nation that is portrayed as an extremist nation. Its totally a different story here when you see the pictures. :)
