GUJRAT: Five hunters were fined Rs0.5 million on Monday for shooting urials in the forests of Pind Dadan Khan, Jhelum.

On a tip-off, the District Wildlife Department had arrested them red-handed from the forests.

The team, led by Assistant Director Wildlife Salt Range Mudassar Hasan and District Officer Wildlife Tanveer Janjua, also seized two slaughtered urials from the suspects.

The hunters were kept in the Pind Dadan Khan police station lock-up for a night and were released on Monday morning after the payment of Rs0.5m fine.

Mr Hasan said two of the five hunters were residents of Lahore while others hailed from Jhelum. He said hunting of urial was banned.

Earlier around a month ago, the department had captured some people and recovered at least seven urial in two different raids in the Salt Range area. The urials were handed over to the Punjab Wildlife Department Lahore.

SHOT DEAD: A man was shot dead and another was injured in firing between the players of two volleyball teams at Eshra village near Shadiwal on Monday.

Reports said two volleyball teams started quarreling with each other over some issue. Some of the players resorted to firing and the bullets hit Qaiser Feroze of Mano Chak of Mandi Bahauddin district who was standing near the ground, killing him on the spot. Another man, identified as Tayyab, was also injured.

Farzana Qaiser, the wife of the deceased, lodged a case with the Kunjah police, stating that Saeed, Bilal, Akhtar, Ijaz and six others had gunned down her husband, a mill worker, for not accepting their offer to work at their place.

She alleged the suspects had entered her husband’s place and shot him dead in front of her.

Police have registered a case against 10 nominated suspects on the report of deceased’s wife.
