LAHORE: The Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Punjab University, claims to have discovered a novel thermo-acidophilic enzyme which can efficiently hydrolyze starch into glucose and maltose syrups in a single step and in a simpler way in the absence of any other enzyme ant.

According to a varsity spokesman, the research is conducted by Dr Nasir Ahmad, Dr Muhammad Saleem Haider and School of Biological Sciences’ Dr Naeem Rashid and Dr Muhammad Akhtar. The US Patent Office also issued patent in their names in this regard, he added.

“It is the first international patent of Pakistan in the field of industrial enzymes. Since the last three decades, scientists around the globe have been in search of efficient enzymes that could simplify the process of starch hydrolysis for glucose and maltose production,” he said.

He said the PU scientists work would simplify the industrial process of glucose production and benefit the country’s economy. “There is not even a single unit of enzyme production in Pakistan. With the support of public and private organisations efficiency of this excellent enzyme may further be improved. Mass scale production of it will not only suffice our own needs but can also help earn a lot of foreign exchange,” he said.

Meanwhile, Yasar University Turkey’s International Office Deputy Director Levent Gasgil and International Education Officer Efe Carlik on Tuesday called on PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran and discussed various issues of mutual interest and stressed the need for enhancing academic collaboration.
