ISLAMABAD: Before beginning a new parliamentary year, the National Assembly will meet on May 31 to honour one of its recently-deceased members.

A special sitting of the lower house has been convened in memory of the late Jhelum MNA Nawabzada Iqbal Mehdi, who passed away on May 23. The ailing lawmaker breathed his last in New Delhi, where doctors were attempting a liver transplant.

According to NA Secretariat spokesperson, after the death of a sitting member – be they treasury or opposition – it is parliamentary tradition to convene a session of the house specifically in honour of the departed. Such sessions usually have a one-point agenda and are adjourned or prorogued after offering fateha for the deceased.

A joint sitting of both houses of parliament had earlier been summoned on June 2, a day ahead of the budget session.
