SRINAGAR: Six suspected militants and a soldier died in two separate gunbattles in India-held Kashmir as violence flared in the disputed region, police and the army said on Friday.

Soldiers on Thursday morning intercepted a group of militants allegedly trying to cross the Line of Control. An intense two-day gunfight ensued in which four suspected militants were killed, while a soldier also died, army spokesman N.N Joshi said.

Four ‘militants’ were killed during the operation, three on Thursday and one on Friday, he said. One soldier also died. A separate clash on Friday saw two suspected militants killed in Kanchipora, near the tourist resort of Gulmarg, police said.

Indian forces cordoned off the village following information that militants were hiding inside a house, triggering a fierce gunbattle, police superintendent Imtiaz Hussain said. Two security personnel were injured during the gunfight, another police officer said.
