TEHRAN: More than 30 students who partied at a graduation ceremony in northern Iran have received 99 lashes each for violating the Islamic republic's morality code, a news agency reported.
“Following a report about a large number of young boys and girls mingling together in a villa around Qazvin, all those taking part in the party were arrested immediately,” Mizanonline quoted on Thursday the town's prosecutor general as saying.
Esmail Sadeghi Niyaraki said the youths were put on trial and each sentenced to 99 lashes, a punishment which morality police carried out the same day “so to be a lesson for those who attempt to breach the conventions”. No date was given.
“The arrest of this many young girls and boys, who were half-naked, consuming alcohol and were engaged in indecent behaviour, hurts the public opinion,” the official said.
“Thank God, within less than 24 hours, interrogation, investigation, trial, issue of verdict and carrying out the verdict were completed,” said Niyaraki.
Mixed dancing is banned in Iran, especially if females do not wear the Islamic veil, and alcohol is prohibited.
Niyaraki also warned that any restaurants or catering halls which allowed such mixed events or served alcohol would be closed down.

The young people in Iran are suffocated. This medieval practice of whipping will not give any positive results but agitate them further. Rather character building through education would be the right way to go about such actions. I am sure the theocracy setup in Iran are not up-to the job to implementing such programs so they resort to physical means such as lashing these poor souls.

Partying and drinking are personal matters. What has a group of people in government got to do with it? Has the person physically harmed anyone? Government and other people have no right to force a change in behaviour when it is only personal. The rest are just those who want to control every aspect of everyone's life to conform to their own view of the way things should be. Thankfully that time is passing fast.

Iran sound like some Madraasa. When at young people do not enjoy there youth they will end up hardcore mullaha at there later age. Western countries have more Liberty and freedom and its proven that not effect country progress. Even after so much open society and anti Islamic practice ,every Muslim want raise there kid over there.

Pakistan should have similar rules for all the people who are involved in corruption at all levels, specially the elite.
Iran is much more reasonable when it comes to human rights the Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and so many other countires.

@Viking Star ....admire Iran. Are you serious.??? Would really like to get your view someday when the shoe is on the other foot and you are at the receiving end. Even if everything they described is true (and given the nature of these regimes i think there's most likely a bit of exaggeration) in most part of the world this not warrant such a harsh punishment. Remember there is always someone somewhere whose world view will be more conservative vs. yours - how would u like it if they deem ur behavior unacceptable and subjected u to such punishment

@viking star! Its not about live and let live. Its not a jungle rule. We r humans and we hv to obay the rule of law. The state hv to decide the parameters of laws. Its these masses who selected the government and now they have to obay them. Why alchol is forbidden.... Let me tell you in the words of Rumi. Its not alchol that make you evil. The evil/ bad is within you. Alchol only bring out ur inner bad to actions. Alchol is forbidden therfore to keep a veil on ones inner originality. Therefore @viking star the state want to comfort us not to distract us by showing our evil side to community.

the main reason behind extremism is conservative thinking , this conservative thinking cut down creativity n limit the thoughts . if some1 dont allow youth to explore or to njoy (untill n unless youth don't don't harm other ) than youth with sulk n they never will be able to view world without any bias they will always think negative about others who afe dffrnt then them . what Islamic fundamentalist are doing is against sg creator ,creator create evry1 with unique talent ,character n identity , n fundamentalist are killing that uniqueness and are creating discipline army which in future will become so intolerant that they won't be able to stand ne1 with very slide dffrnt thinking.
