APROPOS the report ‘Breaking free: how solar energy is changing lives’ (May 22). I would request the KP government to sell its surplus energy to Wapda.

During summer vacations, the solar panels of the 400 schools would keep generating electricity which will go waste. Why not sell this energy to Wapda and generate funds for the schools? Similarly, the energy generated after working hours besides weekends and holidays can also be sold to Wapda. This can be made possible by installing a net metering system in each school.

Net metering system is a billing mechanism that credits the owners of a solar energy system for the electricity they add to the grid. For example, if a residential customer has a solar energy system on the home’s rooftop, it may generate more electricity than the home consumes during daylight hours. This surplus energy can be fed to the grid and revenue earned. Imagine how much energy would be generated by the 28,178 government schools of the province.
