LAHORE: Police thwarted three suspected robbers’ bid to flee custody, while another escaped when they were being shifted to a “private place” for interrogation on Tuesday.

According to a police source, four suspects were being transported from Shafiqabad police station to a private “cell” across the River Ravi for interrogation without handcuffs.

When the police van carrying the suspects reached on Ravi bridge, the suspects suddenly jumped out of it. One of them plunged into the river and disappeared in the deep waters, the source said, adding that the remaining three were nabbed by police after a chase.

However, according to Shafiqabad police, they had raided a hideout in Malipura locality where, according to a tip-off, four criminals -- Irfan, Ramzan, Nabil and Ishaq -- were planning some crime.

They claimed that Ishaq fled the hideout during the raid, while his three accomplices were arrested.

The police also claimed to have recovered illegal weapons from the suspects’ possession. Shafiqabad police lodged a case against the alleged robbers, the police authorities said.
