KARACHI: Director General (DG) Rangers Major General Bilal Akbar announced the suspension and arrest of at least five Rangers officers for their alleged involvement in the death of MQM worker Aftab Ahmed.

According to Geo News anchor Shahzeb Khanzada, Major General Bilal Akbar said five Rangers personnel have been suspended and arrested following the probe launched to resolve the matter of Aftab Ahmed's death in Rangers' custody.

Vowing to take the investigation to its logical conclusion, DG Rangers reportedly told the television channel that the five suspended officers include two in-charges and three subordinates. All five are being investigated.

Soon after the DG Rangers statement, MQM's senior deputy convener Farooq Sattar welcomed the development and expressed hope that every officer involved in Aftab Ahmed's killing will be brought to book.

In a statement issued on MQM website, Sattar hoped that an impartial and transparent inquiry will follow and people will be made aware of the developments in the case.

Rangers brought Aftab Ahmed, coordinator of senior MQM leader Dr Farooq Sattar, to Jinnah Hospital on May 5 claiming he had complained of chest pain. "He was brought at 7am and died at around 7:45am after doctors failed to revive him," Dr Seemin Jamali, head of emergency at JPMC had said.

Major General Bilal Akber later accepted that the deceased MQM worker was tortured by Rangers in custody and vowed that strict action will be taken against those responsible for misconduct.

He, however, had maintained that the cause of death was a heart attack.
