HYDERABAD, Nov 18: Activists of the Sindh National Party marched from the Haider Chowk to the cane commissioner’s office here on Tuesday to launch the Save Sugarcane Movement.
The protesters — including children and led by Ashraf Noonari, Hakim Halepoto and others — also staged a sit-in outside the cane commissioner’s office.
They also entered the office to present a memorandum but the cane commissioner and staff were not available.
To express their anger over the absence of the officials, the SNP leaders locked on the office.
Speaking on the occasion, they said sugar mills had failed to start sugarcane crushing season on Nov 15 despite the directives of the Sindh government.
They regretted that the cane commissioner had not filed any case against the mill owners for violating the law.
They warned that the SNP would continue their protest if growers were not paid their dues and quality premium before Eid.
PALIJO: Awami Tehrik chief Rasool Bux Palijo has said when Egypt, Iraq and Sindh were considered civilized nations, the people of Europe were living in the Dark Ages.
He was speaking on “New Awakening in Europe” at the concluding session of an educational workshop organized by the Sindhi Hari Tehrik in Pubban on the outskirts of Hyderabad on Monday.
Mr Palijo said the people of Sindh were more civilized than other nations at that time.
He said during the Dark Ages in Europe, a writer was burnt alive by the clergy for writing a book.
Sarwar Bari, Javed Rajpar, Darya Khan Rahujo, Gul Hassain Kerano and others also spoke on the occasion.
Mater plan: Hyderabad Jamaat-i-Islami Amir Shaikh Shaukat Ali has urged authorities concerned to prepare a master plan for the city without any further delay.
Talking to journalists and party workers at an Iftar party at the JI office here on Monday, he said the district government should improve water supply and sewerage systems and construct roads.
He called upon elected representatives to come up to the expectations of the people and realise their responsibilities.
Mr Shaukat regretted that instead of initiating road schemes and improving the traffic system, local councils were concentrating on the recovery of tax on motorcycles and cars parked outside shopping centres.
The JI leader also demanded that encroachments should be removed in the city.
He urged the Hesco administration to stop issuing detection bills to consumers.
District council member Rana Mehmood Ali Khan also spoke on the occasion.
