LAHORE: The district and sessions judge on Wednesday stayed execution of a murder convict to allow him to reconcile with the complainant party.
Execution of Muhammad Azad was slated for Thursday (today) at Kot Lakhpat jail.
A trial court had sentenced Azad to death in 2001 for killing a minor girl. The convict filed a petition against his death warrants and stated that the complainant had forgiven him.
The counsel for the complainant also confirmed before the court that his client had pardoned Azad and he had no objection in halting the execution.
The sessions judge accepted the petition and stayed the execution of the convict.
WARRANTS: The sessions judge issued death warrants of two murder convicts for their execution on Feb 17.
The North Cantonment police had registered a murder case against Obaidullah and Shikar Ali. They were awarded death sentence in 2009 and their appeals against the penalty were dismissed by the high court and Supreme Court. The president also turned down their mercy appeals.
The Kot Lakhpat Jail superintendent had requested the court to issue death warrants of the convicts. Judge Nazir Ahmad Gajana issued warrants for the execution of the convicts on Feb 17.
