LAHORE: The Opposition in the Punjab Assembly on Wednesday boycotted the proceedings when the chair did not allow them time to speak on “public interest” issues.
The House was taking up questions regarding the health department when opposition leader Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed stood up and alleged that more than Rs22 billion funds allocated for the department were being transferred to the Orange Line metro train project at the cost of poor patients.
The chair asked him to follow rules and ask supplementary queries about the already submitted written questions. At this the opposition walked out of the House.
Led by Mr Rasheed and carrying placards inscribed with slogans against the train project, they marched from the assembly building up to the 90-The Mall, the chief minister’s offices.
Earlier, a treasury MPA, Mian Tahir, also walked out of the House in protest after failing to get an assurance from the government about addition of 50-bed facility in the emergency ward of the Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology and filling of vacancies.
