ISLAMABAD: Villagers attacked a police team when it came to arrest a drug dealer and detained its two members, sources told Dawn on Wednesday.

The police had information that a drug dealer was present in the area of Pind Bhagwal as he was spotted on a roadside. When the team tried to arrest him, he pulled out his weapon and started firing and ran towards jungle.

The police team chased him, but the villagers, armed with batons, intercepted the police team, they said, adding they thrashed the policemen and overpowered constable Shahid Hussain and constable Qasir Khan. In the meantime the drug dealer managed to escape, they added.

“They tore the uniform of the constables and took them to village and detained them there,” a police official said, adding later they were freed after negotiation.

The police said that the drug dealer had criminal record and after obtaining bail in a case he did not appear in the court, they added.

The investigating officer, SI Tassaduq Hussain, when contacted said after the incident the drug dealers and the attackers escaped from the village. Raids were conducted at their hideouts, but they were still at large, he added.

He said that the villagers helped the culprits as they were either relatives or hailed from the same clan.
