PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Sardar Mahtab Ahmad Khan on Monday appointed Prof Iftikhar Hussain as the acting vice-chancellor of the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Peshawar.

He would be working as the acting vice chancellor till the appointment of the full-time VC at the varsity, a notification issued by the government said.

Iftikhar Hussain is a senior professor at the UET.

Meanwhile, the Engineering University Teachers’ Association (EUTA), which had launched a protest campaign against the government for giving extension to Eng Imtiaz Hussain Gilani for the fourth consecutive term as acting VC, hailed the decision, according to a press release.

The EUTA had called off the strike when Chief Minister Pervez Khattak assured them that new acting VC would be appointed soon. It said Prof Iftikhar had been awarded the best teacher of the year by the Higher Education Commission, besides being awarded the best researcher by the Ford Company.

Mr Hussain, who started the department of industrial engineering at the UET and has been its chairman since 2006, has experience of work at the University of Bradford, UK, and King Saud University of Saudi Arabia.
