KARACHI: An anti-corruption court on Saturday extended the remand of a suspect till Feb 12 in over 30 cases pertaining to a multi-billion trade subsidy scam.

After the end of his first remand, the Federal Investigation Agency produced Faisal Siddique Khan, said to be a frontman of former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, in court and sought an extension in his custody for further questioning.

The court allowed the plea and extended the suspect’s physical remand till Feb 12.

Mr Gilani, several former and serving senior officials of the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan along with some private persons have been booked in dozens of cases for their alleged involvement in approval and disbursement of fraudulent trade subsidies of billions of rupees to several fake companies through fictitious claims and backdated cheques during the tenure of the last Pakistan Peoples Party government at the Centre.

Garden SHO issued notices on contempt plea

A sessions court issued on Saturday a notice to the Garden SHO on a contempt of court application against him for not registring a case despite a court order.

Hira Lal, the custodian of a 60-year-old temple located on the premises of Karachi Zoological Gardens, moved the contempt plea against the SHO stating that the court had directed him on Jan 29 to record his statement under Section 154 of the criminal procedure code and register a case if a cognizable offence was made out regarding a last month incident when the temple was allegedly stormed during the Durga pooja by three armed men, asked the devotees to stop pooja and manhandled them.

Additional District and Sessions Judge (south) Zafarullah Solangi summoned the SHO for Feb 8.
