ISLAMABAD: Malik Tanveer, an independent candidate from union council (UC) 40, I-8, was allotted the election symbol of a Chitrali cap by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), which he used in his campaigns as well.

However, just a day before the elections, he found that instead of a Chitrali cap, the ballot papers featured a Jinnah cap.

Mr Tanveer decided to contact the ECP authorities and asked them to postpone the elections to a later date because a change in his election symbol could affect his chances of winning. However, the thought of delaying the polls disturbed other candidates contesting from UC 40 because the investments they had already made in campaigns will have gone to waste. PTI candidate Ali Awan told Dawn Mr Tanveer wanted to delay the elections.

“The night before elections we convinced Malik Tanveer not to delay the polls. We assured him that our workers will tell every voter that Mr Tanveer’s symbol had been changed. If the elections had been delayed, all our efforts would have been in vain,” Mr Awan said.
