PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa health department has terminated 91 health workers including 56 medical officers, 18 medical technicians and 17 leady health workers for remaining absent from duty.

The health department has also ordered disciplinary action against 568 other health workers for remaining absent from duty, said a statement issued here on Sunday.

It said that the absenteeism was reported by the Independent Monitoring Unit (IMU), set up in the department to monitor attendance of staff and availability of medical facilitates in public sector hospitals of the province to ensure better and round the clock health service delivery to the people.

In this connection, a meeting was held here the other day to review the overall performance of IMU with Provincial Minister for Health Shahram Tarakai in the chair.

Health Secretary Dr Yousaf Jamal, Director-General Health Services Dr Pervez Kamal, IMU project director and other officials concerned and representatives of DFID attended the meeting. The participants of the meeting were given detailed briefing about the last six months performance of IMU.

They were informed that on the report of IMU, explanations sought from 110 officials while deduction was made from the salaries of many others over absenteeism and negligence.

The meeting was told that owing to monitoring and reporting of IMU teams almost all the vacancies of medical technicians and lady health visitors in primary healthcare facilities were filled while there was a remarkable reduction in absenteeism of staff.
