Army pugilists dominate second day of national boxing

KARACHI: In the quest to retain trophy, the Army pugilists dominated the second day when their fist fighters won five more bouts to surge on top in the 35th National Boxing Championship here at the KPT Sports Complex on Thursday.

All together, Army have grabbed eight places in the quarter-finals of different categories. Two of their boxers -- Hasan Irshad and Mohammad Farooq -- won in 49 and 52kgs at the time of filing the report on Wednesday while Gulzaib joined them by winning the 64kg bout later.

The Armymen who made it to the quarters on the second day include Mohammad Qasim (69kg), Mohammad Asif (75kg), Awais Khan (81kg), Ahmed Ali (91kg) and Yasir Javed (+91kg).

There’s a three-way tie between last year’s runners-up Wapda, Navy and Balochistan who have earned six slots apiece in the last eight.

Five PAF boxers have made it to the quarters followed by the hosts Sindh (four), Gilgit-Baltistan and Fata, having three places each, followed by KPT and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (two each) and Railways one.

75kg: Faisal Khan (Balochistan) bt Jahangir (KPT) TKO second round; Mohammad Asif (Army) bt Faraz Ahmed (Islamabad) TKO third round; Farrukh Javed (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) bt Rafiullah (Fata) disqualified second round; Afzal Khan (Gilgit-Baltistan) bt M. Mohsin (Sindh) TKO third round; Tanveer Ahmed (Navy) bt (Wapda) 3-0.

81kg: Nisar Ahmed (Wapda) bt Munawwar Ali (K. Electric) TKO first round; Asmatullah (Balochistan) bt Amruddin (Fata) TKO second round; Shabbir Baloch (Railways) bt Tahir Khalil (HEC) KO second round; Awais Khan (Army) bt Dur Mohammad (Navy) 3-0.

91kg: Asad Khan (Balochistan) bt Waqas Saleem (PT) 2-1; Ahmed Ali (Army) bt Irfan (Punjab) TKO first round; Bazir Khan (Fata) bt Zia-ul-Haq (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) 3-0.

+91kg: Mir Waiz (Wapda) bt Abdul Kareem (Balochistan) 3-0; Mehmood Hasan (PAF) bt Ubaid (Sindh) 3-0; Majid Ali (Navy) bt Qasim (Punjab) TKO first round; Yasir Javed (Army) bt Taimoor Khan (Gilgit-Baltistan) bt Yasir Javed (Army) 3-0.
