SUKKUR: The controversy over the Nov 27 meeting of the Sukkur Electric Power Company (Sepco) meeting of its board of directors persisted with its secretary, Tariq Majeed Memon, insisting that under a Sindh High Court order issued on Wednesday he retained the powers to convene any meeting.

The Sepco management had given the additional charge of secretary to its corporate accounts manager Imdad Ali Mirani, who issued the notice for the Nov 27 meeting.

Mr Memon said an ear lier Sepco order for his transfer to Larkana was also illegal.

He had challenged the order through a contempt plea filed in the SHC, which on Wednesday ruled: “Tariq Majeed will continue to work as Company Secretary, notices be issued to the respondents (i.e. GM (HR) PEPCO Muhammad Saleem Jat and CEO SEPCO Muzafar Ali Abbasi) for submitting comments on contempt application.”

The matter was fixed for hearing at Karachi on Dec 15.

Meanwhile, a Sepco spokesman, Manzoor Hussain Soomro, also contested the claim that the the Nov 27 meeting had the item of extension in the service of its retiring chief executive officer on the agenda.

He said Mr Mirani had the additional charge of company secretary since Nov 6 as Mr Memon was transferred to Genco-IV, Larkana.

Reliable sources within Sepco said that the item of the CEO’s service extension was very much on the meeting agenda for which directives were given to Mr Mirani by Pepco and Sepco high-ups.

Mr Memon, citing the company law, says that no official except for the company secretary can issue a BoD meeting notice and that, too, has to be issued at least seven days before the date of the meeting. “In the present case, the notice was issued four days ahead of the meeting,” he argues.
