Four days after the massive 7.5 magnitude earthquake shook parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan, victims still wait to be rescued as temperatures drop in the mountainous areas and the region's overall death toll from the temblor exceed 380.

Go back and see the pics again. You will notice one thing. Wood structure is still standing and stone and brick structure falls. Someone need to tell them to use wood, but then I also know wood is expensive for these poor people.

It is nature but look what we have done! Why the construction on fragile mountains? Why no respect for nature? How long we continue this?

A lot of the buildings have a foot or more thick layer of dirt on the roof. it is good for insulation. but also it means there 90+ pounds of load per square foot of wood framing. seems like they probably have enough wood, it is the lack of insulation which drives them to put so much dirt on the roof. Pakistan's Engineering schools should take a look into the traditional building practices and the material preferences of these northern folks for insulation in buildings. And Population pressures are probably also contributing to building houses in more and more precarious location. The Anthropology of house building engineering practices in this area must be studied before it all goes under(God Forbid).
