LAHORE: The health department has introduced a new policy to overcome shortage of specialist doctors at district and other government health facilities in Punjab.

Under the Post Graduate Admission Policy for Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, 20 additional marks would be given to those medical officers at the time of admission to post graduation who would have spent two years at basic health units of the province. Similarly, 12 numbers would be given for two-year service at rural health centres and 10 to doctors with experience of two years at district headquarters and tehsil headquarters hospitals.

A meeting was held at the health department on Tuesday to review implementation on the new postgraduate residence (PGR) admission policy.

Health Additional Secretary (Technical) Dr Salman Shahid, Medical Education Deputy Secretary Dr Nasir Shakir and team members of Chief Minister’s Health Roadmap Emma Hannya, Jonny Barty and Ahmed Razzaq attended the meeting.

Dr Shahid said all principals of medical colleges, medical superintendents of teaching hospitals and executive district officers (health) and other officers concerned had already been informed accordingly.

He said medical institutions had started implementing the new PGR admission policy. He further said the new policy would encourage young medical officers to get admission in any specialised field and maximum doctors would get benefit from the policy.
