LAHORE: The Punjab government has declared the Children’s Hospital, Lahore, an autonomous institute.

The top offices – dean and medical director – of this largest healthcare facility for the children in Punjab will remain intact.

The chief minister accorded approval under the Autonomous Institute Act 2003-4 on a summary moved by the health department.

A notification in this regard was issued on Tuesday.

When the Punjab government gave autonomous status to some major public sector hospitals in 2003, the Children’s Hospital was dropped from the list for being in the process of completion.

At that time autonomy was granted to Jinnah Hospital, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Services Hospital, Lahore General Hospital, Punjab Institute of Cardiology, Lahore etc.

In a separate notification, the government also constituted a four-member administrative committee to run the affairs of this institute till the formation of its Board of Management (BoM).

The committee comprises adviser to the chief minister on health, the health secretary, finance secretary and the dean of the Children’s Hospital. It will also recommend names for the formation of BoM in a couple weeks.
