IT was quite enlightening to read the article, ‘Ending rabies’ (Sept 20) by Dr Naseem Salahuddin. Stray dogs are a big menace in Pakistan, including my own neighbourhood. Some developed and developing countries, including Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Thailand, have nearly eliminated rabies from their territories.

Since the method of culling the canines has totally failed everywhere in the long run, the new approach uses either vaccination alone of at least 70pc of the feral dogs or their capture, neuter and vaccination.

Our politicians and leaders who vie for our votes at election time do nothing about many of our problems later.

Walking the street, especially after dusk, is troublesome in my area.

The only cure for rabies in Pakistan seems to be to first cure our rulers and self-declared ‘khidmatgars’. Some of our leaders are engaged in corruption and misgovernance. These types should be given in the care of psychiatrists or Sufi masters, who could teach them to lead a principled and clean life.

After that, we will hopefully have administrators who will really do something about solving our troubles.
