MQM chief’s bail in money laundering case ends on Monday

KARACHI: The period of bail granted to Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain by the British police in July in the money laundering case is ending on Monday.
Mr Hussain was arrested by the British authorities in London on June 3 last year.
Since then, his bail has been extended for four times and he has been interviewed twice — after his arrest in June last year and later in April this year — by the Metropolitan Police who had so far not filed any charges against him.

On July 8, Mr Hussain’s bail was extended by British authorities who directed him to appear before them on Oct 5.
According to an MQM statement issued on Friday, Mr Hussain will go to a South London police station on Oct 5 (Monday) as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of money laundering.
“He will attend the police station on that date to be further interviewed. Both the MQM and Mr Hussain deny any involvement in money laundering,” the statement said, adding that the party would release further details when available.
Besides Mr Hussain, two more London-based MQM leaders — Mohammad Anwar and Tariq Mir — are facing money laundering investigations and they are also on bail till Oct 6 and 7, respectively.

@Haque Parast But in Pakistan Guilty until proven innocent. Our law varies from person to person. Our Judiciary and LEA's have different criteria to treat different people in different ways.

He has been portrayed by the establishment in Pakistan as a corrupt leader. People in Pakistan see and believe what they are shown. But in Karachi people know the reality and this is why in elections results are in favor of MQM to the surprise to rest of Paksitan.

Majority of karachiites are now looking for another party whom they can trust but it seems to me that, nobody is caring for karachi. I was a die hard MQM supporter but, i voted for PTI on the name of change in 2013 elections and they also don't care about karachi. Even if PMLN gives us our basic rights believe me they will see unexpected results in next elections but nobody cares. That is why people have no choice other than voting MQM. All big posts are for punjabis and sindhis. Dear Imran Khan, if you really care for karachiites, then do dharna on discriminative behaviour with mahajirs by non karachiites and stand for our rights.

@Adnan He was arrested for a megre amount, its peanuts for party leader you can say loose change. I'm not a fan of his but he seems to know whats going on in the country more then any political leader. If his workers were more faithful to him he would have been even stronger. to win his case is simple all he has to do is give a few names of his donaters who can verify his income to the party, case finished

Half a million pound is not a big deal for a middle class leader of Pakistani origin as he gets regular donations from his supporters in Pakistan.On the other hand Pakistani leaders and influentials making millions of pounds thru corrupt practices and kept in UK in properties and banks accounts is being ignored by British police.We hope that justice to be provided to AH by British justice system considering his political victimisation by the corrupt mafia in Pakistan.

@The Master First 600,000 pounds is not a meagre amount in UK terms found from a man on benefits. Secondly any donation or gift worth more than £5000 needs to be reported to tax authorities and is taxable. If it was that simple matter would have been closed by now

Lets take the worst case. He is indicted and later even sentenced for money laundering. In the grand scheme of things money laundering of the scale that he is accused is puny compared to the enormous crimes that many, overwhelming many, of Pakistan's top civil and military officials have committed. Yes, he has been guilty of many political blunders but that needs to be dealt politically not on the basis of military might or ethnic majority. This will almost make mqm an enduring legacy.
