SOUTHAMPTON: Matthew Wade’s quickfire 71 not out revived Australia as the World Cup-winners made 305 for six against England in the first day/night One-day International here on Thursday.

Australia lost four wickets for 29 runs to be 193 for six in the 37th over.

But wicket-keeper Wade and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, neither of whom played in the World Cup final, turned the tide with a seventh-wicket stand of 112 in 13 overs after leg-spinner Adil Rashid took four for 59.

Marsh brought up Australia’s 300 by hitting Chris Woakes for six down the ground off the penultimate ball of the innings.

Left-hander Wade, who took nine balls to score his first run, faced 50 deliveries in total including 12 fours as he atoned for his part in the run-out of Shane Watson.

The next best score in the innings was opener David Warner’s 59.

After Australia captain Steven Smith won the toss, openers Joe Burns (44) and Warner made a solid start.

Warner had a reprieve on 18 when all-rounder Woakes failed to hold a hard-hit caught and bowled chance.

England, who had won both the preceding Ashes Test series an Monday’s lone Twenty20 against Australia in Cardiff, started to choke off the supply of runs.

Burns fell when he hit a Rashid full-toss back to the bowler to end a first-wicket stand of 76.

Warner, unusually for him, was scoring at under a run-a-ball and went when, beaten in the flight by Rashid, the left-hander edged an intended drive to Woakes at short third man.

George Bailey went down the pitch to smash a Rashid full-toss high over long-on for the first six of the innings.

Smith followed suit with an on-drive that cleared the same boundary but, next ball, he hit a Rashid full-toss to Ben Stokes at mid-wicket, having made 44.

Rashid then struck again when the 27-year-old Yorkshireman had Bailey lbw for 23 with a quicker ball that skidded on.

Glenn Maxwell (15) was then well caught down the legside by wicket-keeper Jos Buttler off fast bowler Mark Wood before Watson was run out to leave Australia 193 for six.

But good controlled hitting from Wade and Marsh saw 93 runs added in the last 10 overs, with their stand a seventh-wicket record for Australia against England in ODI cricket.
