It was a sight Pakistan fans were so used to in the 90s, they took it for granted when their team defended totals.
Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, on their best days, needed just a few runs to play with and their performances often masked the batting failures of the team.
Waqar produced exactly one such spell against a formidable South African batting line up that seemed to cruising towards the target of 209 in the first ODI of the Total International Series at Durban in 1993.
When the dust settled, a sensational turnaround had taken place.
Kepler Wessels’ team fell short of their target by 10 runs after a brilliant century opening stand.

That's why we love Waqar and Wasim. Awesome bowling. No doubt they are the best combination of fast bowling, Pakistan has ever produced.

Pakistan won all matches against South Africa and lost all against West Indies of that very trio cup. Waqar bowled magnificently well throughout the series specially against Africans.

Amir and Asif combination could have been as deadly, if these blokes had stayed straight. Should be given a second chance. Would be 2A's vs 2W's.

Incredible duo of the extremely fast and furious Wasim and Waqar. I remember in 1990s the dream of every cricketing Pakistani child to become like them. They got the pace, the swing, the variety, the aggression and the brilliant mind to tackle every kind of situation faced by their team. As a captain Imran Khan, Miandad even Salim Malik were too lucky to have these guys in their playing eleven. Thank you Dawn for providing us the opportunity to remember and celebrate the Golden era of Pakistan Cricket.

This was the speciality of Waqar. There are tonnes of matches where he did this. He was the best death bowler in the 90s.

@Kakagan , we still have awesome present in cricket too. I cant remember when was the last time we defeated Aussies in test matches, let alone whitewash them before last year's series.

Great Duo and great fast bowlers, they inspired next generation not only in Pakistan but in India as well.. Imran, Wasim and Waqar are still highly respected in India.. players like these (including Gavaskar, Kapil, Sachin) are beyond any country's boundaries .. as a child I always dreamt of seeing one India/Pakistan team.. hope the dream comes true one day.. cheers for our greats..

There was only one Waqar Younis. No bowler I've seen till today who has changed the fate of games all on his own, and doing so consistently. The rare stats which stands out and puts him ahead of his contemporaries (even Wasim Akram) are his Bowled+LBW ratio in his wickets tally, his contribution in games won by Pakistan, and maintaining a consistent strike rate. He was simply lethal at his art and without much help. The kind of dominance he put on the field was worth watching.

@Valar Morgulis What about the late Fazal Mahmood. He devastated the top class batting side of England's team at Oval on Pakistan's first tour of England. Only those of us who were lucky to see that game can appreciate this super star's bowling. He literally turned around a completely lost Test for Pakistan to win. Pakistan was the first country to beat England on her first tour.

Great memories. Even though did not see this match live but do have a recording of it. Fortunate enough to have grown up during the 1990s. What a period for Pakistani cricket. The Ws were just brilliant.

Wasim and Waqar have to be my favourite bowling pair! As a cricket lover, I cannot help but smile and be awe of Waqar's swing bowling!
I think it is time for video binging of Waqar's wickets on youtube!
