KARACHI: The mystery of a huge explosion that rocked parts of the city could not be solved till late on Tuesday night, as police could determine neither the place nor the nature of the blast.

For their part, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) denied any aviation-related incident which could have caused a loud explosion.

The loud noise was heard in Orangi Town, Qasba Colony, Manghopir, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, North Karachi, Baldia Town and other parts of the city at about 10:30pm. Soon afterwards, almost all the television channels began telecasting ‘news’ about an explosion that had rocked District West of the metropolis.

Amid speculations and unconfirmed reports first it was said that an explosion had taken place in Orangi Town but later the Manghopir area was claimed to be the blast site.

Later still, a few channels said an aircraft had crashed which further deepened the mystery. However, the spokesmen for both the PAF and CAA denied any incident related to aviation.

“The site and nature of the explosion are still not clear,” a senior police officer told Dawn. “Our teams are on the ground and are using all resources to find out the details. It was a huge explosion but there has been no report of any casualty.”
