LAHORE: Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah has opposed Rangers action against corruption, saying the job falls in the jurisdiction of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

“If Dr Asim Husain is involved in corruption instead of funding terrorists, the NAB should take action against him (and not the Rangers),” he told a questioner while talking to the media on the Punjab Assembly premises here on Tuesday.

“If the allegation of funding terrorists has been leveled only to arrest Dr Asim for corruption, it is lamentable and it should not (have) happen,” he added.

Says only NAB should act against the corrupt

Rana Sana argued that whenever action had been taken against politicians in such a manner, it ended badly.

“Masses do not like such kind of accountability,” he added.

He stressed that elimination of all social evils, including corruption, was essential, but only NAB should arrest the corrupt.

He said it seemed that Asif Zardari was shocked at the arrest of a trustworthy friend (Dr Asim) and that’s why the PPP co-chairperson spoke against the federal government.

He said there should be a fair probe into allegation of funding terrorists levelled against Dr Asim.

The minister said Zarb-i-Azb was a great “favour” by the law enforcement and secret agencies to the nation.

He called for taking into confidence the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, PPP and other political parties with regard to success of Zarb-i-Azb and Karachi operations, recalling that the entire nation, including political forces, had supported these initiatives.

The MQM should be provided an opportunity to work as a political party, he added

He said the military institutions, Rangers and police were completely independent to take action against terrorists, their facilitators and financers.

The minister said the progress of the country depended upon the success of Zarb-i-Azb and Pak-China economic corridor.
