American third-graders who were good at math and had wealthy parents were three to four times more likely to file patents later in life than their less wealthy — but equally smart — peers, according to research from Raj Chetty, the Bloomberg Professor of Economics at Harvard University. While this divide may not be entirely surprising, according to Tim Sullivan, “what surprised me was the size of the gap that the researchers found, especially among the kids who were best at math.”
